Australian invention to help parents manage screen time COVID-19 inspires entrepreneurs to build smart lockable device

MELBOURNE – A startup led by two entrepreneurial fathers has launched a campaign to help parents manage their kids’ screen time and focus on quality family time.
Inspired and stressed during the COVID-19 lockdown, Delatite Studios co-founders Al Ramsay and Simon Weeks realised they needed help managing their kids’ screen time. The result is LOOTBOX, the world’s first smart and secure charger for multiple electronic devices.
“Like all parents around the world, we had a big problem,” said Al Ramsay. “Hours of online schooling combined with extra recreational screen time was a tipping point for our kids – they were changing, and we were concerned. ”
“COVID accelerated an existing issue,” added Simon Weeks. “Like many parents, we’ve seen our kids’ behaviour deteriorate as they spend too much time on these highly addictive screens. It didn’t feel right, we had to do something.”
Ramsay and Weeks discussed a simple idea – a lock box for devices, but more. If you’ve seen “The Social Dilemma” documentary on Netflix you’ll know that a lock box is not enough.
LOOTBOX charges up to 12 devices of any type, including large laptops and game controllers. It also features clips to keep cables tidy inside the box.
What makes LOOTBOX really different? Apart from its clean and functional design, smart sensors alert your phone if the kids, or anyone else, break into the box. The sensor app also tracks access to LOOTBOX, giving parents valuable information about when screen time begins.
LOOTBOX was design-led by Victor Bejan, industrial designer and lecturer at leading Melbourne universities. The device itself draws inspiration from the likes of Apple, so it looks at home anywhere.
“We are finalising production adjustments and have launched our Kickstarter campaign. The response so far has been amazing,” Bejan said.
Delatite Studios is a socially-minded enterprise which develops products to help people. Once fundraising goals are achieved, the company will support not-for-profit organisations which focus on kids health.
“Our primary aim for LOOTBOX is to help families find screen time balance and restore meaningful connection. We hope that, with funding support via Kickstarter, LOOTBOX will make a positive difference to other families, as it has ours,” said Weeks.
