PRESS RELEASE 19th October 2021, London – FIREUP, the company behind the world’s first science-backed Dutch oven, today launches a Kickstarter campaign offering customers an exclusive opportunity to purchase the FIREUP Dutch oven. The one-of-a-kind cooking pot is the first real innovation in cast iron cookware in nearly a century; its patented finned design not only looks iconic but significantly outperforms traditional Dutch ovens in efficiency and heat distribution.

While conventional cookware only heats from the bottom, FIREUP cookware is different. The unique finned design guides heat across the bottom and up the sides of the FIREUP Dutch oven, resulting in more efficient and even heat distribution, preserving the aroma and flavour of food. The design upgrade creates an oven-like, even cooking experience with superior heat conduction and retention.

FIREUP uses science-based innovation to upgrade cookware classics. Its first product is the FIREUP Dutch oven, available for purchase on Kickstarter and shipped worldwide. FIREUP was launched by Raghav Agarwal, a former Oxford University MBA student, who brings experience in cookware manufacturing and has earlier founded a business in India exporting home goods.

The FIREUP Dutch oven is already being referred to as a design classic. Like the Alessi lemon squeezer (designed by Philippe Starck), or the iPhone (designed by Jony Ive), the FIREUP Dutch oven is a perfect example of the maxim: form follows function (Louis Sullivan). The design is the direct result of blending research and product design to create something as functional as it is beautiful.

Our signature fin technology was developed based on heat exchange theory used in rocket design. It allows more even heat distribution on all stovetops and in ovens, and greater efficiency on gas hobs by guiding the flame around the pan and into the fins. The fins also retain heat and create an oven-like even cooking experience. They also make the pan look unique and beautiful on your table. The perfectly-fitting lid retains steam when you braise, sear or boil, enriching the flavour and aroma of your food. The lid has a raised rim to make it secure when serving.

The FIREUP Dutch oven is a great example of science meeting design. Months of laboratory testing was used to confirm the science behind the patented fin design, but the aim of our innovation is simple: to deliver an incredible cooking experience. We incorporated cast-in extra-wide handles so the pan would work with oven gloves, allowing you to serve directly to the table.

We made the FIREUP Dutch oven just the right size. Some cooks prefer greater depth for frying and baking, while others wanted their Dutch ovens shallow for easy braising and searing. The size and shape of our Dutch oven is similar to some of the most versatile designs on the market, allowing you to do almost everything with one piece of cookware. The five-litre volume is perfect for four to five people.

FIREUP came out of the Student Entrepreneurs programme, Oxford University Innovation initiative, introducing students to intellectual property available for commercialization. During the programme, Oxford University Engineering Professor Thomas Povey and Raghav Agarwal met and discovered their mutual passion - cookware innovation. Consequently, they started collaborating to develop highly innovative and aesthetic cookware on the market. The patent underpinning this unique Dutch oven design was developed by Professor Povey, who applied his research into high-efficiency cooling systems for next generation jet engines to an everyday object that transfers heat: domestic cookware.

The company has already completed an initial production run of FIREUP Dutch ovens. The product is designed in Oxford and manufactured in Belgium. The Kickstarter campaign allows us to manufacture enough quantities before scaling production lines. The company is able to ship worldwide, and anyone with access to the internet can order the Dutch oven. The ambitious and growth-focused company hopes to scale production to 10,000 units in the first year and launch two new products in 2022. Orders processed on Kickstarter will enable the team to streamline its production, expand the team and build new partnerships with global cookware businesses.

FIREUP is launching at a time when the healthy home cooking trend has seen massive growth. Lockdowns, restrictions, and health awareness as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic have rekindled many people’s interest in home cooking. People are looking to eat more consciulsy in part due to the higher risks of complications and fatality posed by COVID-19 to those overweight or obese, as said by Public Health England [2]. Almost two in five (37%) Brits say the COVID-19 outbreak has prompted them to add more nutrients that support the immune system to their diet [3]. The FIREUP Dutch oven is made from recyclable cast iron, uses zero plastic in the packaging, and is made of safe, healthy, and long-lasting materials that contain NO PTFE, PFOA, lead or cadmium.

Raghav Agarwal, CEO and founder of FIREUP, said: “Our mission is to bring cutting edge research and technology into everyday consumer products, creating a special cooking experience. The FIREUP Dutch oven’s patented finned design is not just iconic but also significantly outperforms other Dutch ovens in efficiency and heat distribution. “
