The Spiralis 3D is a bolt action pen that has been 3D printed in steel and comes with a matt black brushed finish. The Spiralis 3D was designed using CAD and produced using 3D printing. It operates using a bolt action mechanism to extend and sheath the writing tip.A process called Direct Metal Laser Sintering creates the pen layer by layer. Afterwards I use a lathe to fit threads, which allow a titanium screw to hold the pen in place for the bolt mechanism operation.

The components of the the Spiralis 3D are the pen shaft, pen bolt, threaded insert, spring and a M3 titanium screw. The cartrige can be removed by completely remoing the screw and extracting the bolt. This pen can be assembled and disasembled multiple times without damaging the components or risk of cracking. There are three groves at 120 degree angles with a smooth bevel. This allows for a comfortable grip. The spiral design removed the bulk of weight from the design, and allows the cartridge to be visible from the exteria.

The full length of the pen stands at 11.7cm, allows for a compact and yet sturdy design. The Spiralis 3D went through various incarnations before arriving at the final deisgn. the first prototype was developed on the lathe in aluminum in oder to establish the critical dimensions for the bolt action mechanism.Initial designs intended for 3d printing were found in practice to have poor grip, even when textured, and so it was established that a wider area needed to be created, withoud adding too much weight to the design.

A spiral was generated mathematically, and combined together with a thicker viewing window. this created a design that remaining skeletal, but also allowed for the extra girth and gripping comfort offered by the viewing window. The end result is a sturdy and ergonomic pen design. As this is 3d printed out of solid steel it is likely to last a lifetime and can be considered a heirloom quality penThis pen is designed to take Fisher Space catriges. I chose this cartidge due to the lognevity compared to other cartriges available on the market. I wanted this pen to minimize waste. Therefore the body is resuable and the catridge is plastic free.
