Abrace: smart bracelet for kids with autism
Innovative smart bracelet to help autistic children and their parents prepare for and prevent sensory meltdowns.
When an autistic person experiences a sensory meltdown, they may feel extreme confusion, panic and frustration. This is often made more difficult by not being able to communicate these feelings to those around them, such as parents, carers or teachers.A wide range of colors will allow every kid to pick up a bracelet that matches their aesthetics in the best way.Abrace devices come along with a cute set of plug-in patches illustrated with funny animals that will definitely gain love of every kid.
No one knows their child as well as parents, and only they are able to reach out in a critical situation and help to deal with an oncoming meltdown, but sometimes, even they can have a hard time. Our bracelet is a great tool that was made to accurately predict these situations and quickly alert about them and help carers better understand their children.Every child has an opportunity to choose the device in favorite color and create an individual design.
In an ever changing world, triggers can come from nowhere, and it’s impossible to always be one step ahead of a child with autism. Everytime we think we have covered all bases and planned everything meticulously, change happens. It can be stressful for a child with autism - even if the parents or guardians don’t immediately perceive the change to be impactful. In the future we plan to expand the palette of colors and sets of patches with cartoon animals. That will provide our bracelet line with maximum diversity.
Easily-changing patches allow you to customize the bracelet for your’s kid mood whenever you want.Autism statistics made by CDC identifies around 1 in 44 American children on the autism spectrum and more than 10-fold increase in prevalence in 40 years. ASD affects over 3 million people in the U.S. and over 75,000,000 people (about 1% of the world's population) worldwide.
Studies also show that prevalence rates have increased from 10 to 17 percent annually in recent years and the dynamics is still unknown.Abrace – is a smart bracelet for kids with autism that helps parents to recognize and regulate child’s emotional arousal. Our cloud solution based on AI is able to determine the level and the reason of emotional excitation with high accuracy - from 60% to 90%.
Abrace algorithm predicts increasing emotional outbursts up to 10 minutes, which enables parents to prevent sensory meltdowns.Every parent or supervisor who has nurtured a child with autism will have experienced the effects of a child having a sensory meltdown - and just how quickly these overloads can occur. We have provided Abrace with the set of minimum necessary functions to improve its energy efficiency and reduce the size of the device so that it suits the purpose of a bracelet for kids.
Abrace removes the guessing, and allows you to act swiftly. Whilst the bracelet is continually learning, it will also allow you a better overview of your child's patterns and triggers. Our innovative sensor works with Electrodermal Activity (EDA), providing the Abrace system with a variety of data. It’s more advanced than current GSR sensors, so Abrace can take 5 different physiological parameters and provide more accurate data.
When a person experiences stress, a lot of parameters in their body change. These changes affect the electrodermal activity (EDA), which is recorded by our sensor. The data from the sensor is processed by Artificial Intelligence. This algorithm can learn and adapt to a particular human being, allowing our bracelet to fit almost everyone. After analyzing these indicators, AI sends real-time information to a mobile application. A carer can monitor that information and provide the necessary help.
What is EDA in easy words? To put it simply, we would like to draw a parallel with detective movies. No doubt you have seen a polygraph. Machine which uses sensors, placed on the fingers of the suspects. This machine is able to track slight changes in the skin activity and identify who is experiencing stress and therefore lying. We just have improved and expanded this principle and put it into a compact device.
We, at Abrace, understand that in the anticipation of a meltdown, each minute is valuable. The faster you will react, the less intense the emotions would be and the recovery would be easier. That is why we have designed a simple and user-friendly app. The app sends a notification in advance of a sensory meltdown which would give you more time to take the necessary actions. The data can be shared with autism specialists, teachers, and anyone else within an autistic child’s support network.
It is very important for us to base our product on science. Please, pay attention to the study from 2019 conducted by a team of scientists from University of Missouri and University at Buffalo. The left-most blue pin represents the beginning of the problem behavior, and the right-most pin represents the end of the problem behavior. In the figures A and B we see EDA build-up prior to engaging in problem behavior jumping in seat, repetitive body hitting.
They came to the conclusion that on average, across all episodes of problem behavior documented, across all students, the students displayed an anticipatory rise in EDA prior to engaging in problem behavior 60% of the time. The maximum accuracy was 89%. EDA data were obtained using a Q-Sensor pod wristband. Artifacts in the EDA data were easily detected as they tended to be characterized by quick “spikes” in the EDA data that aren’t physiologically likely.
Our journey has begun with a team of enthusiasts trying to create a solution for children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Each member of the team had previous experience of hardware and software development. Abrace team includes specialists in the field of psychophysiology, marketing, PR and product launching. Our company is fully staffed, diversified in terms of different skills and ready to solve complex challenges.
We also actively cooperate with specialists in the field of psychophysiology, under whose supervision the devices undergo a number of laboratory tests, psychologists, and other specialized experts working with ASD.
You have to order one of these before it's too late!
